How Netsons Built a Managed Kubernetes Service on OpenStack with Clastix Kamaji

Netsons began as a community project offering free hosting in the early 2000s, became a web hosting company in 2007 and now serves over 200,000 business customers, primarily in Italy. With a strong foundation in cloud computing backed by OpenStack, it set out to build a Managed Kubernetes offering with the self-service capabilities customers expect from a hyperscaler — without the cost and complexity of enterprise-first Kubernetes products.

Netsons chose Kamaji, whose hosted control plane model provides a dedicated Kubernetes cluster per client while optimising hardware utilisation and operational management. Integrating Kamaji with OpenStack through Cluster API gave Netsons a fast-delivery platform covering the whole stack, from infrastructure to orchestration. The team led the integration itself, working with Kamaji's core maintainers, and contributed to testing and validating the OpenStack integration along the way.

The service that resulted creates a brand new cluster in five minutes, provisions the entire stack from a few clicks or API calls, and simplifies complex Day-2 operations through Kamaji's integration with the underlying infrastructure — all behind a management interface Netsons built and runs in-house.
