AT A GLANCE

Challenge

As a CSP, Dinova's tenant clusters needed to be isolated, transparent, resilient and scalable. Worker nodes still ran on a separately licensed, proprietary hypervisor, and standing up a single cluster took 1โ€“2 days.

Solution

Kamaji for control plane management and Sveltos for resource provisioning and drift detection, extended down to the infrastructure layer with kMetal, running tenant workloads on kernel-native KVM.

Outcome

Provisioning cut from 1โ€“2 days to minutes, control planes provisioned in under 16 seconds, and fully isolated tenant clusters running on the bare-metal servers Dinova already operates.

SUMMARY

Success story overview

Dinova, a strategic innovation partner headquartered in Bologna and part of the Maggioli Group, runs a managed Kubernetes service for its customers. As a CSP, its tenant clusters needed to be isolated, transparent, resilient and scalable, and the team needed to remove customer access to the control plane entirely while standardizing on fully conformant, upstream Kubernetes. Dinova adopted Kamaji to run each tenant's control plane as pods within a central management cluster, and Sveltos to provision resources and automatically restore critical ones after accidental changes. With Sveltos and Kamaji in production, the next challenge sat one layer down: worker nodes still ran on VMware, and standing up a single cluster took 1โ€“2 days. kMetal, built on Kamaji, removes the separate hypervisor layer and runs tenant workloads on kernel-native KVM, on the servers Dinova already operates. The result: provisioning cut from 1โ€“2 days to minutes, control planes in under 16 seconds, and zero shared resources across fully isolated tenant clusters.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Isolated: each customer (tenant) must have a dedicated cluster with no shared resources
  • Transparent: provisioning and management of nodes and resources should be seamless for the customer
  • Resilient: critical infrastructure resources must remain intact, even with customer actions
  • Scalable: deploying and managing numerous clusters efficiently is crucial
  • Digital sovereignty, preferred by public administration and increasingly requested by private customers

KEY OUTCOMES

  • Provisioning cut from 1โ€“2 days to minutes with kMetal
  • Control plane provisioned in under 16 seconds
  • Zero shared resources across fully isolated tenant clusters
  • Sveltos auto-restores critical resources after accidental changes
  • No separate hypervisor layer: tenant clusters run on existing bare-metal servers
"kMetal delivers impressive flexibility and simplicity while staying true to the Kubernetes standard. Clastix support is highly responsive, offering a direct line to the developers."
