The Linux Foundation Europe

The Linux Foundation, with its 20-year history of supporting open technology collaborations globally, has extended its reach with the establishment of Linux Foundation Europe. Its European arm aims to harness the vibrant open source community in Europe, which is integral to digital transformation and innovation across various sectors, including Cloud Native. By providing collaborative efforts and offering support for European projects and companies to achieve global success, Linux Foundation Europe is a catalyst for the European open source community, reflecting the old continent's common values of freedom, democracy, and equality.

Open Source Software Industry Challenges

Today, the open-source software industry is navigating through hard times marked by significant challenges. Recent events, such as licensing changes of Terraform, the shutdown of Weaveworks Company, and Redis transitioning from an open license to a business license, underscore the complexities and evolving dynamics within the sector. These developments signal a critical juncture for open-source communities, prompting a reevaluation of sustainability, governance, and the balance between openness and commercial viability.

Clastix's Commitment to Open Source

Since its inception in 2020, Clastix has been an advocate for open-source principles through the development of Capsule, a pioneering multi-tenant operator for Kubernetes. Capsule's success, evidenced by widespread adoption and a growing number of contributors, led to its donation to the Cloud Native Computing Foundation in 2023 as a Sandbox Project. This move ensures Capsule's neutrality and facilitates a safe adoption, underscoring Clastix's commitment to open, independent, and sustainable solutions within a collaborative technological ecosystem.

After Capsule, Clastix introduced Kamaji, an open source initiative that embodies the “Hosted Control Plane” design, to support an innovative approach in Kubernetes architectures. This effort aims to democratize a technology paradigm once exclusive to hyperscalers by bringing unprecedented automation and scalability in Kubernetes deployments to a broader audience, including large enterprises and independent cloud providers.

Despite the challenging macroeconomic landscape pushing open source companies to face sustainability pressures with enterprises cutting back on spending, venture capital becoming scarcer, sustaining growth facing issues, Clastix remains committed to keep open source its core project. Clastix's dedication to open source software reflects our belief in the power of collaboration to shape the future of technology.

Shared Values

Clastix and Linux Foundation Europe share fundamental values that emphasize the significance of open-source software for innovation. Our joining Linux Foundation Europe reflects the commitment to adhere to the open source software principles within the global tech landscape, aiming to support a more open, inclusive, and collaborative technological future. This alignment highlights the importance of open-source initiatives in driving technological progress and ensuring the independence and sustainability of software solutions in an ever-evolving industry.

A Hope for the Future

We hope that our public commitment to open source serves as an inspirational blueprint for other companies, advocating for a balanced approach that fosters innovation, assure sustainability, and avoid full closed source models. We encourage others to contribute to a community-driven ecosystem while safeguarding their projects' future. Thank you!
